KVK, Rayagada (Gunupur) is situated in North Eastern Ghat Zone, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, a dream Project of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, is mandated for assessment, refinement, training and demonstration of improved technologies to bring social and economic upliftment of farming community of the country, 56% of population of Rayagada are tribes. Some extinguishing tribes viz. Dangaria Kandha, Kuntia Kandha and Lanjia Saura are found only in Rayagada. Cotton, paddy, maize, sunflower and cashewnut are major enterprises in the district. KVK has introduced oil palm, Sweet corn and yambean in the district and since inception from 2005 has been striving hard to achieve the mandates under the aegis of Odisha University of Agriculture and Technologies. Production and productivity of different crops like paddy, vegetable, cotton, maize and sunflower increased due to FLD, OFT, field day and capacity building programme conducted by KVK. It is needless to highlight the impact of Kisan mela, exhibitions, field days and literature published which has motivated the farmers and farm women of the district.

Mandate of KVK

The mandate of KVK is Technology Assessment and Demonstration for its Application and Capacity Development.

To implement the mandate effectively, the following activities are envisaged for KVK:

  • On-farm testing to assess the location specificity of agricultural technologies under various farming systems.

  • Frontline demonstrations to establish production potential of technologies on the farmers’ fields.

  • Capacity development of farmers and extension personnel to update their knowledge and skills on modern agricultural technologies.

  • To work as Knowledge and Resource Centre of agricultural technologies for supporting initiatives of public, private and voluntary sector in improving the agricultural economy of the district.

  • Provide farm advisories using ICT and other media means on varied subjects of interest to farmers.

  • In addition, KVKs produce quality technological products (seed, planting material, bio-agents, and livestock) and make it available to farmers

  • Organize frontline extension activities.

  • Identify and document selected farm innovations and converge with ongoing schemes and programs within the mandate of KVK.

  • Demonstration on ICM packages on agriculture and allied activities for immediate economic gain to the tribal families.
